Top Tips for Copywriting in 2020

In this article, we will break down the five copywriting tips you need to transform your writing.

With an ever-increasing flow of online content, you need good copy to stand out in the crowd. We've collated a list of our top tips for copywriting in 2020.

Copywriting Tip #1 - Research

As obvious as it may seem, this tip is an important one. Do you want to teach people about a subject? Then you will need to understand it yourself. Also, the more research you do, the better. This allows you to play with the information and make it easier for the reader to understand.

Copywriting Tip #2 - Language

Copywriters need to write in a language that readers can understand. Also, using everyday language will help make your pieces less confusing. However, that does not mean you cannot use technicals. But it means that you have to write about them in a way that someone who’s not used to the terms would be able to understand.

It’s about making the piece clear to the reader so that they can easily understand it. If you’re unsure on whether a piece sounds right, read it out loud and then you will be able to tell if it sounds natural or not.

Copywriting Tip #3 - Make the copy visually appealing

It’s important that not only the content of the article is easy to understand, but also that it is visually easy to read. To accomplish this, make sure that the font type and size are clear. If for example, someone lands on the article and must squint their eyes or feels the need to put more focus than normal into reading it, they probably won’t stay on the article for very long.

Another tip for making your copy more visually appealing is to separate it up. Techniques to do so could take the form of bullet points, numbered lists and subheadings, the use of which can clearly show the reader the key points that you’re trying to make whilst avoiding large blocks of text.

Tip #4 - Stay focused, avoid distractions

A lot of writers run into distractions when they aren’t sure what to write next, or how to phrase something. An easy way to try and avoid this is to create a plan before you start writing. This can be an outline of the different subheadings that you want to include, research and a word limit. This document can be then referred to when you hit a roadblock.

This is an easy way of keeping track of what it is you’ve written and can help you avoid repeating yourself. If you want to be able to write with absolutely no distractions, a good idea is to turn off your phone and log out of your emails so that you won’t be distracted by the different notifications that come through.

Tip #5 - Think outside of the box

If you’re ever getting stuck for ideas on how to write a certain bit of content, take a step back and think about the ways that you wouldn’t normally write it. It might seem to be completely out there and feel like it might not work, but there is always the chance that it could. Thinking outside the box will allow you to look at different topics in different ways, meaning that you can find unique angles to write from.

Copywriting lies at the heart of any excellent marketing strategy. Well-written copy can benefit your business in more ways than one. It can help you to earn a high Return on Investment, drive profitability and achieve your business’ goals by convincing your target customer your product will provide value.
